Thank You to The Daytripper: Celebrating Elgin, Texas!

We have some exciting news to share. Chet Garner and his crew from the TV show The Daytripper recently visited us here at Southside Market & Barbeque.

They made a brand-new episode all about our hometown of Elgin. The episode aired on PBS and is now available to watch on YouTube!

It was a true honor to host Chet and his crew. More than anything, we are so happy that they featured the town of Elgin, which is full of wonderful small businesses and great neighbors. We are very grateful for the support of our local small business community and the opportunity to share it with the rest of Texas.

Southside Market and Barbeque started a long time ago in 1882. Back then, William Moon delivered meat by a horse-drawn wagon. There were no refrigerators in 1882, so to keep the meat from spoiling, he had to season it and smoke it quickly. Thus the Elgin sausage was born.

In 1886, Southside opened its first brick and mortar store on Central Ave. in downtown Elgin. After the business expanded, partially through the partnerships with local grocery stores like the then small H. E. Butts Grocery Co., Southside moved into the old Security National Bank building on Hwy. 290 in 1992, where it still calls home today.

Now Southside Market is the Oldest Barbeque Joint in Texas. We take great pride in this history. For 144 years, our family has slow-smoked authentic Central Texas barbeque the exact same way every single day. We are proud that our history helped Elgin become known as the "Sausage Capital of Texas."

Southside is also proud to remain a small family-owned business. Bryan and Rachel Bracewell bought the market from Bryan’s grandparents in 2010 to keep our traditions alive, and we still make our famous all-beef "Elgin Hot Guts" sausage fresh in the restaurant every single day.

We want to say a big thank you to The Daytripper crew. We also want to thank all of our customers who have supported us over the years.

Please go watch the episode and help us celebrate the great town of Elgin.
Thank you, The Bracewells & Southside Market Family
